The Magic of Emilia-Romagna, by Pollini at Ladbroke Hall

On Sunday 24 May, we host a long Italian lunch at Pollini, Ladbroke Hall with chef Emanuele Pollini. It is the latest in our Magic of… series, where we champion a single region, ingredient or tradition for an afternoon, told through the people who know it best.

Emilia-Romagna is, quite simply, the most important food region in Italy. Home to Bologna and the original ragù. Home to Parma, and the ham and Parmigiano Reggiano that bears its name. Home to Modena and traditional balsamic vinegar. A region where almost every town has given its name to something you have eaten, and where food is taken as seriously as anywhere in the world.

Chef Emanuele Pollini grew up in Cesena, in the heart of it. He learned to cook from the azdora, the women of the household who keep the pasta traditions of Emilia-Romagna, before training professionally and, in 2020, being named Best Italian Chef by Gambero Rosso. His restaurant at Ladbroke Hall holds a Michelin Guide listing and three forks. For this lunch, he has written a menu that is a personal tribute to the region he came from.

Lunch opens with piadina Romagnola and gnocco fritto, squacquerone di Romagna DOP, Mora Romagnola cured meats from Saludecio, and erbazzone. Then two pastas: a traditional lasagna with pork ragù and béchamel from Emanuele's family recipe, and strozzapreti with peas and wild herbs. Free-range chicken to follow, braised and lightly roasted. Dessert is traditional Zuppa Inglese.

Ladbroke Hall is one of the most beautiful rooms in London. A restored Edwardian motorcar works in Notting Hill, now home to art, music and one of the city's most talked-about Italian kitchens. It is the right room for a long lunch that asks you to settle in and not leave for a while.
