INTRODUCING SIP SCHOOL NIGHT TWO: WINE IS PEOPLE

Wine Is People is the second night of Sip School; our three-part wine and dining series at Sune with Honey Spencer and Sarah Wright. Where night one challenged the myths about natural wine, night two puts a winemaker at the table.
Every bottle is somebody's year of work, somebody's bet, somebody's idea of what wine should taste like. Night two is about drinking with that somebody in the room.
ANGELO VAN DYK

Our first winemaker is Angelo van Dyk, South African-born winemaker, importer, and founder of Yo El Rey Wines and Wasted Wine Club. He's spent time in almost every corner of the wine trade. In his own words: "I've farmed it, made it, poured it and sold it."
A 2016 harvest in California with Pax Mahle inspired Angelo to start making his own wine, and Yo El Rey was born in 2018 with a tiny 1,700-bottle release of Syrah and Grenache. Today production has quadrupled, with Angelo working alongside a network of small, organically farmed growers across the Cape. The name, "I, the King", comes from a phrase used by a young Pablo Picasso, and has become something of a mantra: believe in the idea, and back yourself enough to see it through.
SARAH WRIGHT

Our second is Sarah Wright, who guests from night one will already know. Born in Denver, Sarah first fell for wine in California's urban wineries, and the thread has held: after running the wine lists at Evelyn's Table and The Mulwray, she crossed from the floor to the cellar at London Cru, London's first urban winery.
At London Cru she makes traditional method sparkling and still wines from English fruit, in a cellar in Fulham, where the English weather, as she puts it, keeps them guessing and keeps them agile. She also makes wine under her own label, Wright Wine.
