Sera x Kitchen Table: Off Menu, Chappett's Café
OFF MENU
Sera presents Off Menu, a three-night series with two-Michelin-star Kitchen Table. For each night the chairs come out, the lights go down and the tasting menu is put away. The kitchen cooks 'off menu', the food it would never serve on a normal night, while the room drinks and eats around the chefs at work. The series runs across Chappett's Café (11 November), The Dive Bar (17 February) and Late Night London (14 April).
NIGHT ONE: CHAPPETT'S CAFÉ
The series opens with Chappett's Café, an idea conceived in the comfort of Sandia Chang and James Knappett's own kitchen. At home they cook almost exclusively Asian, and for one night they transform two-Michelin-star Kitchen Table around it.
From the moment you walk in, it won't look or feel like Kitchen Table. There's a shot waiting at the door, the chairs are gone, and guests move between the kitchen counter and the lounge bar all evening. Plates come out through the night from the counter, where you can stand with a drink and watch the chefs cook and plate them.
Doors open at 6:30pm, with food flowing from 6:45pm until 9:45pm. The bar is open until midnight.
A two-star kitchen, cooking the food it eats on its night off.
SANDIA CHANG & JAMES KNAPPETT
Sandia and James opened Kitchen Table on Charlotte Street in 2012. It won its first Michelin star in 2014 and its second in 2018. James cooked at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, The Ledbury, Per Se in New York and Noma in Copenhagen before that. He met Sandia at Per Se, and she now runs the restaurant's wine and champagne programme.
THE FOOD
The menu is inspired by Taiwanese and Chinese home cooking, with a British streak running through it. There are eight dishes in all, among them beef shin tea sandwiches with sriracha mayo and pickled daikon, tea-smoked devilled eggs and cumin lamb heart skewers, before rice bowls with Mama Chang's Lu Rou to close.
