On Sunday 19 April, Sera and Bibi present ‘Kenyan BBQ’, the first in a three-part series exploring how Indian flavours have shaped food cultures around the world.

The series begins in East Africa. Indian communities settled in Kenya in large numbers from the late nineteenth century onwards, bringing with them familiar ingredients such as cumin, coriander seed, turmeric, ginger, and garlic, alongside methods of marinating and seasoning meat before cooking. Over time, these approaches became part of everyday Kenyan cooking, particularly around food prepared over an open fire.

In coastal regions and in cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa, this exchange shaped the way meat was prepared and sold, from street grilling to family gatherings.

For this event, the menu centres on food cooked over fire. Mutton samosas and pili pili prawns, followed by poussin wings, chicken seekh kebabs, paneer mishkaki, and BiBi’s take on nyama choma from the grill. These are served with mogo pipiri masala, kachumbari, roti, and house chutneys, before finishing with pineapple and coconut kulfi.

This first event sets the direction for the series, using food to show how migration and settlement influence the way people cook, season, and eat over time.

Due to the unique nature of this event, we are unable to accommodate dietary restrictions, or menu substitutions. Tickets are non-refundable.
